The Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the development of innovative approaches for improving the diagnosis and treatment of voice disorders. The Center was established by the Department of Surgery to integrate pioneering research with state-of-the-art medical, surgical and behavioral management of throat disorders that affect the larynx and voice. It is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of renowned surgeons, speech-language pathologists and research scientists who have been working together for over fifteen years to develop new diagnostic and treatment paradigms.
The latest approaches to medical and surgical management and voice-therapy services for all types of laryngeal voice problems are provided at the Center, including:
Clinical care is integrated with, and continuously improved by, an expansive ongoing program of research that is funded by both federal (National Institutes of Health) and private foundation sources. Recent advances include the development of new lasers and drug regimens for treating laryngeal cancer and papilloma while optimizing voice outcomes, and the application of emerging technologies to assessing laryngeal function for voice production.
The center is also a site for advanced clinical training in voice surgery and therapy, as well as education in voice science. A majority of this training work is done in our home Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and in affiliation with leading academic institutions including Harvard Medical School (HMS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the MGH Institute of Health Professions.
