During the summer and fall, the Massachusetts General Hospital Volunteer Department offers a Junior Volunteer Program for 16- and 17-year-olds. The program is designed to provide those who qualify with an opportunity to give back to the community, while exposing them to both the values of volunteerism and the field of healthcare.

Junior volunteers work with Mass General staff and adult volunteers and have daily contact with patients and families in a variety of hospital settings. All junior volunteers are trained as patient escorts to help patients get to their doctor’s appointments or assist with escorting patients who are being discharged from the hospital.

This is a position that requires independence, maturity, flexibility, excellent people and communication skills and immediate problem solving.

The Summer Program

  • Runs eight weeks throughout July and August
  • Junior volunteers serve in two four-hour shifts per week (9:00am – 1:00pm and 1:00pm – 5:00pm, subject to change)
  • Sign up by calling the Mass General Volunteer Department on the first Monday in March; we will accept calls from students until the program is full or through the last Friday in March, whichever comes first
  • Please do not email or leave voice messages to sign up for the program. We will accept in-person calls only on the designated sign-up date
  • Links to application packet and instructions will be emailed to candidates subsequent to their phone call
