Extramural Funding
Wellman Center’s extramural funding has grown substantially since the beginning of the new millennium. Between FY’00 and ’06, total funding grew from less than $8 million to over $23 million. Research grant award revenues alone increased almost 160% during this period, and intellectual property (IP) revenues grew over 300% to over $5 million dollars annually.
Wellman’s multi-year growth trend was reversed somewhat in 2007 reflecting federal government budget policies that have negatively impacted research support. In FY’07, Wellman’s grants and contracts revenues fell almost 13% due to the combination of severe constraints in the NIH budget and a reduction in DoD funding for the Medical Free Electron Laser program.
On the other hand, IP license and royalty revenues have held up in 2007 and industry funded research increased more than 60% over the prior year. Wellman Center has created a well-balanced distribution of financial support that will allow it to maintain its research productivity, even during limited periods of reduced public research funding.

Royalties and License Fees
In addition to extramural sponsored research, Wellman Center's intellectual property has generated more than $13M in license fees and royalties for MGH annually over the past couple of years. Wellman's share of these discretionary revenues, $5M/year, provides for start-up packages for new faculty recruitments, the purchase of core equipment, funding for innovative pilot projects, and facilities renovations.
