Graduate Student Training

The Wellman Center for Photomedicine, at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, is the world's largest research institute devoted to the study of photobiology and Photomedicine. Wellman Center offers exciting opportunities for graduate students in the biological sciences, physical sciences and engineering to carry out research in a multidisciplinary environment directed toward diagnosis, therapy and understanding of disease.

The Wellman faculty share an interest in applying UV, visible and infrared radiation to solve medical problems. Research areas include photosensitization, photodynamic therapy, biophysics, optical technologies, photochemistry, photobiology and molecular genetics.  Projects range from fundamental research to development of therapeutics and diagnostics based on the interaction of light with biomolecules and tissue.

Interested students with independent funding or assured mentor support may apply for a training position anytime by direct contact with Wellman faculty. Prospective students are referred to the research interests of current faculty in this website.

Each year the Wellman Center offers a limited number of training fellowships for students requiring supplemental financial support. Participation in the Wellman Fellowship program requires a formal application.

The deadline for applications is August 1st for January funding and April 1st for September funding. Prior to submitting an application students should however contact:
