Research Interests

My research interests lie in Growth Factor signaling in relation to tumor angiogenesis, and in particular, Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Angiopoietins, Tie 2. At Wellman, we are exploring the molecular mechanisms and role of growth factors (VEGF, EGF) and their signaling pathways in an ovarian cancer model. Our current investigation is focused on the role of p38 MAP kinase and the internalization of EGFR following Photodynamic therapy (PDT) in ex-vivo models of ovarian cancer with several FDA-approved photosensitizers. Greater knowledge of these growth factors and their signaling cascades will help us to better understand the molecular steps involved in cell growth, proliferation, survival, and death in a variety of human diseases. Ultimately this knowledge will help us devise optimal treatment regimens for diseases associated with the improper regulation of these cell processes.

Another focus of my research is anti-bacterial PDT using lactamase-specific photosensitizers that can target the b lactamase producing strains of drug resistant pathogens.
