Laser Surgery

Lasers are the most precise, tissue-selective surgical tools. Like the legendary "magic bullets" that only strike an enemy, pulses of light that are selectively absorbed in microscopic targets can cause specific heating and damage to only those targets. By choosing wavelengths that are absorbed by specific chromophores and delivering ultra-short (fractions of a second) laser pulses, heat is selectively generated at the target site with little or no damage to surrounding tissue.

By understanding and exploiting the selectivity and precision possible with lasers, Wellman has pioneered in the applications of laser surgery and has had an immense clinical impact, particularly in dermatology and ophthalmology.
