Research Programs
The Wellman Center's origins were in research into the use of light to diagnose and treat dermatologic diseases. As a measure of how far the Center's clinical interests have expanded, it now describes its focus as “the skin and everything within it” . With minimally invasive surgical techniques and miniaturized delivery systems, virtually every organ in the body has become accessible to the diagnostic and therapeutic use of light.
Wellman investigators have formed collaborations with clinicians from multiple disciplines to translate photomedicine research to clinical applications. This “bench to bedside” research circle is closed by bringing findings from clinical trials back to the lab to design enhanced and new photomedicine technologies.
