A Pioneer in Women's Health

Women's Health Associates at Massachusetts General Hospital was founded in 1985 as one of the nation's first multidisciplinary women's health practices in an academic medical center. As a testament to our model's strength and efficacy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has used our clinic to aid in development of numerous National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health.

Women's Health Associates emphasizes preventive and health maintenance care with a focus on wellness. While we primarily see women across all ages and levels of health, we welcome men to our practice as well. Our team offers high-quality, integrated care and is highly experienced in managing women's unique health needs. In addition to comprehensive primary care, we perform routine Pap smears, manage issues related to pregnancy, menopause and breast cancer survivorship, help with behavioral health concerns and more. In addition to routine primary and preventive care, our providers are also experienced in management of complex and chronic conditions. Our patients also have access to the full range of specialty care at Mass General.

Women Caring for Women

Our provider team includes 17 primary care physicians, two nurse practitioners, and a clinical psychologist, all of whom are female. Medical director and founder Karen Carlson, MD is a recognized expert in the primary care of women, and leads the practice with a strong vision of care for the whole woman. All of our providers have a passion for women’s health and are dedicated to making every patient feel cared for and at home.

In addition to our providers, your care team includes a nurse, medical assistant and patient services coordinator. Each of these staff members works together to provide a streamlined and supportive care experience. Using evidence-based guidelines, self-management tools and educational resources, you can expect the high quality, coordinated care from our team.

During your visits, we take the time to listen to you, answer your questions and work with you in making health-related decisions. We maintain a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in a suite that was designed with your privacy in mind. If English is not your first language, you may request to have an interpreter available. Several of our providers and staff are also fluent in languages other than English. Learn more about medical interpreter services
