ABOUT THE YAWKEY BUILDING

Anyone who has been near Massachusetts General Hospital over the past year couldn’t help but notice an impressive new building—the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care—being constructed next to the hospital’s Fruit Street garage. Soon, the building’s glass and aluminum façade will be in place, and the roof will soon follow, so that interior work can proceed throughout the winter months.

When it opens as scheduled in the fall of 2004, the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care will be the new home of many of the hospital’s major patient-care services. Specifically, it will house the Cancer Center, the Cardiovascular Program, MassGeneral Hospital for Children, the Musculoskeletal Program, and the Women’s Health Program.

This 440,000-square-foot facility, which will be the largest and most comprehensive outpatient center in New England, will comprise ten floors and have a six-level, underground parking garage that will accommodate 725 vehicles.

Designed with input from hospital staff and patients alike, the Yawkey Center will provide a more comfortable, convenient, and pleasant environment for thousands of adult and pediatric patients who come to Mass General for primary and specialty care outpatient care.

The Yawkey Center was made possible by a generous $25 million gift—the largest gift in Mass General’s history—from the Yawkey Foundation. Jean R. Yawkey, who with her husband, Tom, was a longtime owner of the Red Sox, received her medical care at Mass General and was a strong supporter of the hospital and its mission. Following Mrs. Yawkey’s death in 1992, the trustees of the Yawkey Foundation have continued her tradition of charitable giving to Mass General.

The new facility was needed to accommodate the dramatic increase in the number of patients who come to Mass General for outpatient care. In 2002 alone, outpatient visits to Mass General exceeded 1.4 million.

We will continue to keep you informed about the progress of the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care, including dates when specific patient-care services will move into the new building.
