About Eric Shappell, MD

Dr. Eric Shappell is currently assistant director of the Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program, the director of the Emergency Medicine Clerkship at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Shappell earned his doctor of medicine degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and he completed his residency and Medical Education Fellowship at the University of Chicago. In 2018, he earned his Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Shappell has served as senior strategy officer in analytics for Physician’s Evaluation and Educational Review in Emergency Medicine (PEER) since 2019, he has also served as chair of the Education Committee for the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors from March 2019 - March 2020. Dr. Shappell is the editor-in-chief of MD in the Black: A Personal Finance Primer for Medical ResidentsEM Fundamentals Workbook; and EM Fundamentals Facilitator Guide: Interactive Cases and Assessment Tools for Emergency Medicine Educators. Dr. Shappell has a special interest in assessment, test development, recruitment, and financial education for medical trainees.
