About Us
Overview
Complementing the core teaching mission, Mass General Learning Laboratory and affiliated faculty have contributed to the understanding of simulation education through regular academic publications, grant funding, patent filings, and presentations at conferences nationally and internationally.
Learning Laboratory-led studies and subsequent publications have crossed multiple domains including: ratings of inter-professional teamwork and patient care in our simulation operating rooms; the physiology of learner response and activation in the simulated environment; novel outcomes analyses of procedural (central venous line) training; the impact of large-scale departmental training for allergic emergencies; and the utility of longitudinal (full-year) formative simulation training among internal medicine interns. Laboratory-affiliated investigators have earned contracts and grants to create next generation simulation manikins and trainers. Not content to simply implement healthcare simulation, Mass General Hospital simulation faculty are constantly exploring how to optimize the efficacy and efficiency of experiential learning to enhance patient care – a commitment memorably captured in a New York Times feature story and accompanying video. (See Weintrub K. Artificial Patients, Real Learning. New York Times, 2015 Nov 10: Sect. D3 (online Nov 9 with video: Cott E, Laflin B, Hollywood in the Operating Room).)
