Overview
Fellows in the Neuromuscular Medicine program receive training in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neuromuscular disorders in adults and children. Intensive training in electrodiagnosis (EMG) and nerve/muscle biopsy are offered. The Neuromuscular Medicine fellowship is a joint program of the Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals. The Brigham & Women's rotation includes training at Boston Children’s Hospital. Upon completion of this fellowship, trainees are eligible to sit for the Neuromuscular Medicine subspecialty boards under the auspices of the ABPN, as well as the EMG boards (ABEM).
Requirements
Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited neurology residency training program and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Massachusetts.
Curriculum
Fellows rotate in three-month blocks between Mass General and Brigham & Women's/Boston Children's. The curriculum includes several regular teaching conferences, including a yearlong faculty-run lecture series that provides weekly lectures on EMG and neuromuscular medicine, a weekly nerve/muscle biopsy conference, and a weekly EMG waveform conference (Mass General). Fellows and faculty participate in monthly journal clubs. Fellows also attend the Harvard Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine CME course.
Clinical Experience
Fellows rotate through the neuromuscular clinics and EMG laboratories in several participating institutions, including Mass General, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. At Mass General, fellows have a neuromuscular continuity clinic and participate in the multidisciplinary ALS and pediatric MDA clinics. Fellows gain experience performing inpatient electromyography studies and consults for complex neuromuscular inpatients.
Research Experience
Fellows are expected to complete at least one research project during the fellowship year, performed under the mentorship of a faculty member in the division of Neuromuscular Medicine. Fellows are encouraged to present their work at national meetings.
How to Apply
We are delighted to be participating in the common Neuromuscular fellowship application timeline in conjunction with the AANEM/AAN and participating in the neuromuscular fellowship match. Starting with the initiation of this common timeline, we will be reviewing applications beginning March 1st, 2024 and interviewing in Spring 2024 for the fellowship class beginning July 2025. Please note the AANEM online match portal opens on January 1st, 2024 at which point you can begin entering application materials. We will be performing all interviews virtually.
Our Faculty
One of the unique strengths of our program is the breadth of the clinical and research expertise of our faculty. Fellows work with 10+ neuromuscular faculty members at Mass General and Brigham & Women's Hospital during the course of the year, giving them a broad range of expertise.
