BOSTON – The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) has recognized Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) as a national leader for surgical outcomes for three consecutive years – 2016, 2017 and 2018. The hospital is one of only 72 surgical centers across the country who were granted meritorious status for surgical outcomes in high risk cases.
“Mass General is committed to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety and is constantly evaluating our practices so we can provide the best possible care to our patients,” said Keith Lillemoe, MD, surgeon-in-chief at MGH “We know that to accomplish our mission we must constantly look inward by collecting and analyzing surgical outcome data and use it to improve our practice.”
To participate in the program, hospitals submit surgical outcome data to the ACS NSQIP that is used to advance patient quality and safety. Data pertaining to eight clinical areas including mortality, unplanned intubation, ventilator > 48 hours, renal failure, cardiac incidents; respiratory (pneumonia); Surgical Site Infection); or urinary tract infection were included in determining the hospital’s designation.
“This honor is a testament to the hard work of so many individuals but also reflects an institutional culture devoted to clinical excellence,” adds Lillemoe.
ACS NSQIP is the only nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients and is used in nearly 850 adult and pediatric hospitals.
