How do I become a volunteer?
- Create an account using our online system (HealthStream) Orientation Sign Up
- Read the virtual orientation document
- Complete the required forms
- Schedule an interview with one of our staff
If I schedule an interview with one of our staff, but I can’t attend, how do I reschedule?
If you are not able to attend the scheduled interview, please call our office at 617-726-8540 to reschedule. Please let us know the date and time you were scheduled for an interview.
If I am interested in a specific area, what chances do I have to get the assignment I want?
We will make our best effort to place you in the area you desire. However, due to the high volume of volunteer prospects we process, we unable to guarantee a specific assignment. We will discuss availability of any assignment during your interview.
Once I interview, how long would it take to officially start?
The process is different for everyone. Typically, the onboarding process can take from three weeks to a month depending on the volunteer area you are assigned.
If I am a Mass General employee, do I have to complete an orientation again?
Everyone is required to complete the volunteer orientation and all medical and non-medical requirements.
If I have a group of people who would like to volunteer for one day, what is the on-boarding process?
We are unable to accommodate group volunteering or volunteering opportunities for one day because we require medical and criminal back ground screening. Our minimum time commitment is 40-50 hours and four months. Both requirements must be completed.
Can I volunteer once a month or every other week?
Our Volunteer Program requires you to come in once a week, every week on a regular schedule (same day/same time every week).
Can I volunteer in two or three different assignments?
At the beginning, we recommend getting to know the hospital and becoming familiar with the geography and culture of Mass General. This is essential to helping patients and families. Therefore, only one assignment is made per volunteer. After you have completed the minimum service time requirement for an assignment you can schedule a meeting with one of our staff to discuss the possibility of adding or changing your assignment.
Do I have to stop volunteering once I complete four months?
We are pleased to have volunteers who have been here for many, many years. Once you complete your minimum service time requirement, you are welcome to continue volunteering for as long as you desire. You can also apply for a different assignment by scheduling a meeting with one of our staff.
I have a 14-year-old son or relative who would like to volunteer. Is he eligible to be a volunteer?
We offer a Summer and Fall (after school) Junior Program. To apply for the Junior Program you must be 16 or 17 years old. Learn more about our Junior Program.
