THE MGH STOP (Stop Transmission of Pathogens) Task Force recently hosted "Hand Hygiene Day" May 12 to celebrate the hospital reaching a 91/94 percent hand hygiene compliance rate – the practice of proper hand hygiene both before and after contact with the patient or patient's environment -- from January through March. The achievement represents MGH's first-ever full quarter higher than 90/90. While that is the standard set by the Joint Commission, MGH's overall goal is 100/100 hand hygiene compliance. The daylong celebration featured an informational table in the Main Corridor staffed by STOP Task Force members and commemorative cakes served in the Eat Street Cafe. Hospital leadership -- including Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president; David Torchiana, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of the MGPO; Jeff Davis, senior vice president for Human Resources; Gregg Meyer, MD, senior vice president of the MGH/MGPO Center for Quality and Safety; David Hooper, MD, chief of the Infection Control Unit; and Paula Wright, RN, director of the Infection Control Unit -- were on hand to congratulate MGHers and help serve the cake, which was free to all.
