Marking milestones: MGH celebrates Ether Day

Ether Day not only marks the anniversary of the first successful public demonstration of ether as an anesthetic, but is a day to honor employees who are celebrating milestone years of service. More than 3,400 pins and ribbons were given this year to employees celebrating 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 years at the MGH.

During the annual Ether Day Celebration Oct. 14 in the Bulfinch Tents, the popular Ether Day Dancers entertained guests with memorable hits from C+C Music Factory, Three Dog Night and Chubby Checker. A performance to “Our Lips are Sealed” by the Go-Go’s reminded the audience of the need to secure protected health information.

David F. Torchiana, MD, chairman and CEO of the MGPO, received his 30-year pin this Ether Day. He joined MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, in thanking those who have dedicated their careers to the MGH.

“Whether you are celebrating 5, 10, 30, 50 or even 60 years of service, you have helped change lives and helped the MGH remain the international leader that it is today,” Torchiana said. “The knowledge and heart you bring to this institution is invaluable.”

Those celebrating milestones of 20 years or more were invited to celebrate once again at the annual Ether Day Dinner held Oct. 20 at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel.
