In General awards and honors: March 15, 2013

The National Board of Trustees at the March of Dimes Foundation has awarded two MGHers with $150,000 Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award grants. Michael Talkowski, PHD, of the Center for Human Genetic Research, will use the award to conduct research on “Convergent Genomic Profiling of Chromosomal Abnormalities During Fetal Development.” Michael Choi, MD, of the Gastrointestinal Unit, will conduct research on “Novel Function of MicroRNAs in Endoderm Induction.”

Gov. Deval Patrick recently honored six MGH physicians with a special citation for their outstanding work at the MGH, their humanitarian work in helping those in need and their commitment as physicians to people in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Friends of Sister Plante requested citations for the following doctors: Janet Hall, MD, physician in the Reproductive Endocrine Unit of the Department of Medicine; Amy Spooner, MD, a staff physician in the Cardiology Division; Fiona Gibbons, MD, a physician in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit; Michael Watkins, MD, an associate visiting surgeon in Vascular Surgery and Vascular Surgery Research; Raymond Malcolm Smith, MD, chief of Orthopædic Trauma Service; and Olga Smulders-Meyer, MD, a primary care physician at the Women’s Health Associates.
