Raising awareness for MGH LGBT community

Group members

MEMBERS OF THE MGH Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Employee Resource Group hosted an information table March 27 in the White Corridor in honor of National LGBT Health Awareness Week, which runs March 26 through March 30. Resources for staff, patients and visitors were available, and group members also handed out rainbow ribbons to promote awareness and celebrate the “Come Out for Health” event. “We hope people stopping at the tables learn what’s available at MGH for the LGBT community and also raise awareness about our organization,” said the group’s public relations coordinator Jared Ruckman, a clinical engineer in the MGH Department of Biomedical Engineering.

The LGBT group was formed in 2008 and has since grown to include more than 250 employees. Its members are dedicated to educating staff about the unique health care issues members of the LGBT community face, and working to ensure the MGH is safe, welcoming and inclusive of these patients. “We also are working on several LGBT-friendly initiatives with the help of Human Resources,” said chairman Kevin Knoblock, NP, in the Gastrointestinal Unit.
