Snapping up savings on exam gloves


One hundred ten million. That is how many exam gloves are snapped onto the hands of employees and staff throughout the Partners HealthCare system each year. The gloves come in more than 220 types and sizes and the total cost for all these gloves is $8 million each year.

Recently, a team was formed to evaluate exam gloves after the current vendor, which supplies about 80 percent of the system’s gloves, projected a significant price hike. The team conducted two-week product trials in more than 20 departments across the system, and the staff in these departments tested nearly 1,000 cases of gloves.

Based on offering a better exam glove at a better price, a new vendor was selected. The switch is expected to save Partners $1.2 million annually.
