Tackling prescription drug misuse

TOWN HALL TALK: Slavin, left, with
Arthur T. Dean, chairman and CEO of CADCA

On Oct. 16, MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, joined local, state and national experts for a Prescription Drug Abuse Town Hall Meeting in Revere to discuss solutions to the epidemic of prescription drug misuse in Massachusetts. Revere is one of three communities nationally selected by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) to host this type of presentation, primarily because of the work of the Revere CARES Coalition, supported by the MGH Center for Community Health Improvement.

“We have seen an explosive growth in prescription drug misuse, especially opioid misuse, throughout our local community,” said Slavin. “The Boston area has the highest rate of emergency room use for opioid overdoses in the country. As health care providers, we do not want to wait for these patients to arrive in our emergency department. We want to engage with local communities to prevent these overdoses and prescription drug misuse in the first place.”
