About this Program

The Massachusetts General Hospital Sumner M. Redstone Burn Center’s Reconstructive Makeup Program provides patients with options for minimizing the appearance of burn-related scars.

What to Expect

We consult with patients who have received treatment at Mass General or another facility. Appointments are generally available the first Wednesday and third Friday of every month.

At your private, one-on-one consultation, you will meet with one of our experienced reconstructive makeup consultants. You will discuss your current skin-care regimen and what you hope to accomplish through makeup. Your consultant will perform a skin analysis to determine the colors and shades that will best create a natural appearance.

After your colors have been selected, your consultant will apply the makeup and provide step-by-step instructions on application. Consultations generally last about 30 minutes.

Thanks to a grant from the Mass General "Making a Difference" program and to a generous private donation, the initial consultation is free for burn patients. In addition, your first set of makeup (moisturizer, foundation, finishing powder and makeup remover) is included free of charge. Additional products are available for purchase at a nominal charge.

The Benefits of Makeup

Many burn patients who use makeup find it helps to soften the impact of facial and body scarring and makes them feel more comfortable around others. The makeup we use is specially chosen to provide excellent coverage for burn scars, as well as provide a natural appearance for both males and females.

The makeup is quick and easy to apply. It is waterproof, sweat-resistant, friction-resistant and long-lasting. The makeup line is formulated for all skin types.
