About This Program

The Massachusetts General Hospital Sumner M. Redstone Burn Center provides innovative reconstruction techniques to improve patients’ appearance and function after burn injuries. Early and appropriate treatment of a burn is crucial in preventing complications and deformities. The Burns Center is committed to addressing reconstruction options early in the course of treatment.

We offer a full spectrum of state-of-the-art surgical reconstruction procedures. In addition, we provide a number of less-invasive techniques, including laser therapy, aimed at improving the appearance of or preventing scars, which may reduce the appearance and pain of certain scars. We also offer a makeup service.

Mass General is the third oldest hospital in the United States and is home to one of the few ABA-verified burn centers in New England. Our team of surgeons includes dedicated burns surgeons, as well as plastic and reconstructive surgeons dedicated to the care of burn-injured patients. Early evaluation ensures that cosmetics and function will be addressed throughout the treatment of an injury.

What to Expect

The Mass General Burns Center team includes board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons and acute burns surgeons who are dedicated to the care of burn patients, allowing for early intervention to prevent and treat the scarring or deformities associated with a burn injury. Patients will initially meet with one of our surgeons, who will conduct an initial evaluation and exam. The surgeon will then tailor a personalized treatment program for the patient to optimize results to address the patient’s needs and goals.

Education and Research

The Burns Center is dedicated to continuing education and research, and offers postgraduate burn fellows and rotating residents from the Department of Surgery the opportunity to participate in all aspects of burn reconstruction.

The Burn Reconstruction Program is actively involved with the Burn Research Center at Mass General. This center has devoted more than three decades of research to improving the care of severely burned patients. Our scientists and physicians are pushing the frontiers of knowledge about how the human body responds to burn injury, the critical role of nutrition in burn care, and the development of artificial skin from stem cells located in adult fatty tissue.
