What Causes Hirsutism?
There are a few causes of hirsutism, which include:
- Hyperandrogenism, in which the female body makes more androgens (male hormones) than usual. This creates an imbalance of male and female sex hormones. While the main role of androgens is to help develop male features, all females have small amounts of androgens in addition to female hormones. When there is too much male hormones, this can lead to facial and body hair, voice changes, muscle development, body growth, and abnormal genital development in females.
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder in which cysts develop on the ovaries. This can also increase the male hormone levels in females.
- Family history
- Obesity or overweight
- Certain medications
- Idiopathic hirsutism, in which there is no clear cause for the condition
