A cut above

MGHfC benefits from Bruins "Cuts for a Cause"

A close shave: Ward, left, and Weinstein

Bald certainly is beautiful according to 14 members of the Boston Bruins who gamely had their heads shaved April 8 for the second annual “Cuts for a Cause” event to benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation and MassGeneral Hospital for Children’s (MGHfC) Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit. Partnering with WBCN-FM, the teammates – Aaron Ward, Patrice Bergeron, Byron Bitz, Matt Hunwick, Phil Kessel, Chuck Kobasew, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Michael Ryder, Mark Stuart, Tim Thomas, Blake Wheeler, Stephane Yelle and Dennis Wideman – each had their hair buzzed by fans who won the opportunity in an auction benefitting MGHfC.

"Last year, Cuts for a Cause made a substantial contribution toward the fight against children’s cancer," said Ward, who organized the event."Like our hockey team, we look to improve on our results each year. With the help of WBCN, the Boston Bruins Foundation, MassGeneral for Children, my teammates and our fans, we hope to have an even greater impact on the fight against cancer at this year’s event."

Fred "Toucher" Toettcher and Rich Shertenlieb, of WBCN’s Toucher and Rich show, hosted the benefit, which was held at The Harp. In addition to the Bruins players, Howard J. Weinstein, MD, chief of MGHfC’s Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit, also took to the stage to have his hair shaved by one of his patients.
