How is Tetralogy of Fallot diagnosed?

In some cases, Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) can be diagnosed prenatally (during pregnancy). After birth, a baby might have a heart murmur, lower levels of oxygen in the blood or an abnormal chest X-ray.

The doctor might use one or more of the following tests for TOF:

  • Echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart)
  • Electrocardiogram (a test to check the heart beat and rhythm)
  • Pulse oximetry (to measure how much oxygen is in the blood)
  • Chest X-ray
