Ramnik Xavier, MD, named chief of Gastroenterology Division


Ramnik Xavier, MD, has assumed the position of chief of the Gastroenterology Division beginning Jan. 1. He succeeds Daniel Podolsky, MD, now president of the University of Texas Southwestern, who led the division for 20 years.

Xavier is an investigator in the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology (CCIB) at MGH and an associate member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. Currently associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, he also will assume the Kurt Isselbacher Chair in Medicine.

Xavier completed his residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the MGH. Following the fellowship, he completed postdoctoral training with Brian Seed, PhD, director and founder of the CCIB. Today, the Xavier Laboratory is working to discover and understand the function of important mediators and effectors involved in innate and adaptive immunity. Xavier has made several important contributions to the understanding of the genetic architecture of inflammatory bowel disease.
