About Mohammed Amin Arnaout, MD

Dr. Arnaout is a physician-scientist in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is Chief-Emeritus of the Division of Nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Arnaout received his medical degree with distinction from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He served on the medical staff of the American University of Beirut Hospital as an intern and resident in Medicine before moving to Johns Hopkins where he completed his residency. He then moved to Harvard where he finished fellowships in immunology and nephrology at Boston's Childrens Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Arnaout is a physician-scientist and served as Chief of the Division of Nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1998-2013. He received many awards including the 2018 Homer W Smith Award from the American Society fo Nephrology presented annually to an individual "who has made outstanding contributions which fundamentally affect the science of nephrology".  He currently serves as a practicing physician, Principal Investigator on several Federal grants and  Director of the Leukocyte Biology & Inflammation Program and the Structural Biology Program in the Department of Medicine and Nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

View my most recent research

Our laboratory is interested in elucidating the molecular basis of human disease and in using this information to guide development of new and safer therapies. We utilize state of the art technologies, including genetics, genomics, biochemistry, cell biology, structural and computational biology and animal models of disease. Areas of interest include integrin biology and structure, pathogenesis of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, lineage commitment in hematopoietic stem cells, mechanisms of ischemic acute kidney injury and engineering kidney assist devices.
