About Lauren Hanley, MD
I am proud to be the founder and Medical Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Lactation Clinic for women and children with complex lactation issues.
I received both my Bachelor of Science and Medical degrees from the University of Miami. I completed my residency program at Brown University in 2000. During my residency, I was fortunate to complete a rotation at the Institute of Health Sciences in Medellin, Colombia, and I am fluent in Spanish. I started my tenure at MGH immediately after completion of my residency.
Throughout my career I have been an active teacher. I have been involved in the teaching and supervision of medical students and residents since I joined the HMS faculty in 2000. I have also enjoyed teaching the nurses and midwives about Breastfeeding Medicine and technologies related to breast pumps and other lactation devices. I am working actively on the breastfeeding curriculum for Harvard Medical Students including simulation.
I have served as the Co-Chair of the MGH Baby Friendly initiative and we are a proud Baby Friendly Hospital. We were designated in 2015 and re-designated in 2020. Our goal is to help our patients achieve their infant feeding goals, whatever they may be.
I serve in several National leadership roles regarding Breastfeeding Medicine. I am the Chair of the Breastfeeding Expert Work Group of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists regarding topics surrounding Breastfeeding support and education for patients and professionals. I also serve as the liaison to the AAP’s Section on Breastfeeding. In addition, I serve on the US Breastfeeding Committee in the areas of Breastfeeding Physician education and Workplace support and education.
I am an active lecturer regionally, nationally and internationally regarding many topics in Breastfeeding medicine. They range from prenatal support of breastfeeding, medical complications of breastfeeding, and substance use and medication use during lactation, breastfeeding after breast cancer, among many others.
When I am away from work, I love spending time with my two daughters and husband, travelling, biking, cooking, and skiing.
