Dr. DiGiovanni is an internationally renowned foot and ankle surgeon. He earned his BA from Dartmouth College and his MD from the Brown University-Dartmouth Medical School Program. He completed his Orthopaedic residency at Brown University before pursuing several fellowships Orthopaedic Trauma at Brown Medical School, Total Joint Replacement at Hospital for Special Surgery, Foot and Ankle Sports Medicine/Arthroscopy at Harbor-UCLA and USC Affiliated Hospitals, Foot and Ankle Surgery at U. Washington Harborview Medical Center and Traveling Fellow, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
Before joining Mass General as Chief of the Foot & Ankle Service in 2014, Dr. DiGiovanni served as Professor and Program Director of the Orthopaedic Residency at Brown University. At Brown he also was Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service, Foot and Ankle Fellowship Program Director and Founder of the Joe DiMaggio Sports Foot and Ankle Center. Dr. DiGiovanni is now Chief Emeritus of the Foot & Ankle Service at Mass General.
Dr. DiGiovanni has been honored many times by his patients with Patient Choice, Compassionate Doctor and On-Time Doctor Awards. He has also been perennially recognized as one of Boston’s Top Doctors and one of America’s Top Surgeons and Best Doctors. He has received the Excellence in Teaching Award by his residents and the Order of Merit from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation for his philanthropic support. Dr. DiGiovanni has served on the surgical advisory board of numerous US and international companies, published over 200 articles, edited five textbooks, and helped gain patents and FDA approval for many foot and ankle technologies to improve patient care. He serves on the editorial board of various journals, and has been a consulting physician for athletes from sports programs including the US Ski Team, the Boston Ballet, Boston Cannons Men’s Lacrosse, Boston Breakers Women’s Soccer, Boston and Harvard College Athletics, Formula 1 Racing, the PGA tour, and the English Premier League. His greatest professional commitment has always been the patients he cares for and the residents and fellows he teaches each day.
Currently, Dr. DiGiovanni oversees the foot and ankle programs at MGH and NWH and co-founded the MGH-NWH Foot/Ankle Research & Innovation Lab (FARIL). He is the immediate past president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Research
Dr. DiGiovanni's research is devoted to improving foot and ankle function with state-of-the-art procedures involving total ankle replacement, growth factor incorporation to improve bone healing rates, sports and fracture care, minimally invasive arthroscopy, limb salvage surgery, bunion and hammertoe reconstruction and various new soft tissue balancing operations designed to maximize and preserve function of the foot and ankle.
He is currently on the Managerial Board of the journal Foot and Ankle International, sits on the International Editorial Board of the European Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and has been a consultant reviewer for a number of other orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. DiGiovanni has authored well over 100 peer review articles, book chapters, and books involving the orthopaedic management of many different foot and ankle problems.
