Advances and Controversies in Colorectal Surgery

This three-day educational course is dedicated to the practicing surgeon. The course will educate surgeons about the current advances and the most updated treatment recommendations in the evaluation and treatment of patients with colorectal disorders. Surgeons will also learn about patients with complex benign colonic diseases and complex anorectal disorders.

Agenda

This course will focus on the current advances and the most updated treatment recommendations in the evaluation and treatment of patients with colorectal disorders. Particular effort will be made to discuss patients presenting with complex benign colonic diseases and patients presenting with complex anorectal disorders. Learners will have the opportunity to register for all or one of the subsets they are interested in and will learn from some of the world experts in the field. This course will offer American Medical Association (AMA) Physician's Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 Credits™ and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) self-assessment credits.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and diagnose common anorectal disorders
  • Determine indications for and the techniques of stapled hemorrhoidectomy, ligation of intersphinecteric fistula tract and other novel approaches to anorectal disorders
  • Diagnose and treat patients with rectal prolapse
  • Develop a strong foundation in the principles of ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) pathways
  • Review and enhance understanding of the current developments in the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Incorporate new techniques in the surgical management of pilonidal disease
  • Discuss current advances in the treatment of colon, rectal and anal cancers
  • Demonstrate proficiency in novel surgical techniques including ventral rectopexy, trans-anal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) and advanced anal fistula/pilonidal surgery techniques
