A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that mammography with breast tomosynthesis is associated with better performance for breast cancer screening.

Researchers from multiple institutions, including Mass General, studied over 450,000 to conclude that the addition of breast tomosynthesis to digital mammography was associated with:

  • a 15% decrease in recall rate
  • a 28% increase in breast cancer detection rate
  • a 41% increase in detection rate for invasive breast cancers

This study is consistent with other large-population studies that show improved performance in recall rates and cancer detection rates when breast tomosynthesis is combined with digital mammography.

Breast tomosynthesis is the standard of care for screening mammography at all locations where Mass General provides breast imaging services.
