Global Outreach for Radiation Protection Program

Global use of ionizing radiation, in particular X-rays, constitutes an important source of radiation exposure to people. About 4.2 billion X-ray examinations are performed globally every year, according to the estimates provided in 2021 by the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).

At the same time, there is an increasing need for medical imaging in developing countries because of the benefits it provides in diagnosing and following diseases. While these benefits are undisputed, there is growing concern for safer use. This concern stems from inappropriate and un-optimized imaging, detection of patients with relatively high doses where radiation effects are likely, as well as apprehension among patients and parents of children undergoing relatively high-dose radiological imaging.

The Global Outreach for Radiation Protection Program conducts research collaborations and educational activities around the world in pursuit of its mission.
