About the Medical Walk-In Unit

Please Note: Urgent care appointments are available via telehealth only. If you have a Mass General Primary Care Provider, please contact their office first to schedule an urgent care appointment. Otherwise, please call 617-726-2707 and select option 4.  A nurse will screen your concerns and schedule an appointment if telehealth is the right option for you.

In-person appointments are currently only for respiratory complaints. Appointments are scheduled in advance and there is no on-site walk-in appointment availability. We apologize for any inconvenience. This center is considered a hospital outpatient location. Please learn more about what this means for patient billing.

The Medical Walk-In Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, an alternative to the emergency room, provides a same-day urgent care option for patients 18 and over who are unable to see their regular physician, are without a regular physician or are visiting the Boston area.

All patients of the Medical Walk-In Unit receive a comprehensive evaluation and treatment of non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, with extremely urgent cases receiving priority attention.

Is your primary care doctor affiliated with Mass General? If so, you may be able to book an urgent care appointment with your physician and avoid waiting in line. Some practices also support booking online. Please contact your primary care practice to get more information about booking an urgent care appointment with your primary care doctor.

Hours of Operation

The Medical Walk-In Unit is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. 
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-8:00 pm
  • Weekends & holidays, 8:30 am-4:00 pm
  • Immunizations and PPD/TB tests provided weekdays 8:00 am-4:00 pm and weekends 8:30 am-1:00 pm. Not all immunizations are available, please call 617-726-2707 for more information.

If the Medical Walk-In Unit is experiencing high patient volume, we may be required to close prior to the posted hours. Please arrive as early as possible and register in advance.

To register, contact the Mass General Registration & Referral Center at 866-211-6588. If you are planning to arrive after 4:00 pm on weekdays or 1:00 pm on weekends, we recommend you call ahead to inquire as to whether the unit may be closing early due to high patient volume at 617-726-2707.

Insurance & Billing

The Medical Walk-in Unit accepts most major health insurance carriers, managed care plans and Medicaid. If your health plan requires authorization, call your primary care physician prior to receiving care, to arrange for your physician’s office to send an insurance referral. Copayments are accepted at the time of service.

The Medical Walk-in Unit provides medical care to patients regardless of insurance coverage. Please note: The Medical Walk-in Unit is a licensed hospital facility, and therefore you will not be billed under an urgent care benefit structure. Our visits are processed as "outpatient hospital visits," and this may result in higher copayments and deductibles. Please review your health insurance coverage or call your health insurance provider to better understand out-of-pocket expenses.

Uninsured or underinsured patients might be eligible for financial assistance through Mass General’s Office of Financial Services. Please call them directly at 617-726-2191.
