The Center for Interventional Endoscopy is an international leader in advanced endoscopic services for treating digestive disease. Our specialists are experts in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), tumor removal and enteral stenting. We use cutting-edge therapies to help our patients with digestive disease.

Procedures We Offer
Mass General is a leader in detecting early malignancies. We offer advanced endoscopic imaging techniques of the pancreas and biliary tract, including:
- Endoscopic cholangioscopy, used to detect and treat stones, tumors and diseases of the bile duct. This technology is currently being used in clinical trials.
- Endoscopic pancreatoscopy, used to detect early malignancies in the pancreatic duct
- Endoscopic-ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of solid, cystic, and complex tumors of the pancreas and bile ducts
- Linear endoscopic ultrasound, used to detect early malignancies of the pancreas
Mass General was one of the first U.S. hospitals to offer endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a minimally invasive procedure that combines X-ray and video endoscope technologies to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts. We helped pioneer cholangioscopy, a new technique in ERCP, and have introduced other novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Some of these approaches are available only at Mass General.Other treatments include:
- ERCP-guided stent placement, stone removal and incision of the pancreatic-biliary sphincters
- Endoscopic-guided drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts
- Endoscopic removal of polyps, ampullary tumors and early cancers
- EUS-guided celiac neurolysis to help control pain related to pancreatic cancer
Our diagnostic radiology team is composed of dedicated imaging specialists whose practice focuses specifically on GI scans (CT, MRI, PET). They are also nationally recognized for expertise in using the most sophisticated imaging tests to detect, diagnose and biopsy lesions in the pancreatic-biliary system.

Our expert team uses many cutting-edge developmental technologies to treat and diagnose digestive disease. This includes support for NIH-funded investigations on EUS-targeted stem cell therapy for liver disease and motility disorders.
Education and Training
We are proud of the many trainees we’ve taught and mentored over the years. We continue to teach residents, fellows and peers. Our providers organize and participate in myriad national and international courses to train practicing gastroenterologists and other specialists. We developed one of the first video atlases used globally to share endoscopic innovations. Our team has served on numerous panels to develop guidelines and standards of practice relating to gastrointestinal care and how to measure and improve the quality of endoscopic procedures.
