Massachusetts General Hospital is home to a vibrant, innovative and caring neuroscience community. Across the hospital, over 2,000 specialists and researchers are dedicated to treating and curing brain and nervous system disorders. The U.S. World News & Report “America’s Best Hospitals” survey consistently ranks our Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry programs among the very best in the nation. We have a long-standing culture of collaboration, we push scientific boundaries and we train the brightest medical minds in the world.
Integrated Team-Based Care
Our physicians maintain a singular focus on providing the highest quality, most compassionate care to every patient. Recognizing the complexity of nervous system disorders, we create specialized multispecialty care teams that integrate across disciplines for better outcomes for our patients. In the clinic, the operating room and the hospital, our entire clinical team is neuroscience specialized.
Unparalleled Research Capabilities
Our research is powered by world-class investigators from the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry and by colleagues and collaborators throughout Mass General’s vast research enterprise. We are both innovators at the bench and leaders in clinical trials, bringing new treatments to patients as quickly as possible.
Leaders in Mind & Body
Caring for our brain and nervous system is a cornerstone of health and wellbeing. Driven by the expertise of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine and the McCance Center for Brain Health, we are at the forefront of integrative medicine and brain health as we leverage neuroscience in every setting where it can enhance health and wellbeing.
Training the Next Generation of InnovatorsWe believe it is our responsibility to ensure the future is as bright. For generations, the brightest medical minds from around the world have come to Mass General to pursue their professional training. Today, our neuroscience trainees participate in multidisciplinary training that prepares them for the future of medicine.
Globally, the toll of brain and nervous system disorders exceeds that of any other class of diseases. What’s more, brain function influences our body’s response to virtually all diseases and plays a vital role in the clinical course of all chronic diseases.
Reducing the suffering caused by brain and nervous system diseases will transform human health. Leveraging our global leadership in patient care and translational and basic research allows us to tackle the needs of our patients and embrace important research challenges by bringing together teams across various scientific and medical disciplines. Every day we strive to revolutionize the treatment and prevention of brain disorders with a vision that begins and ends with our patients.
To empower our patients’ potential for neurological health through the relentless advancement of collaborative neuroscience.

LeadershipMass General Neuroscience was launched in 2018 by the chiefs of the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry; the group was joined in 2021 by the Martinos Center (Mass General Imaging). Together, Merit Cudkowicz, MD, MSc, Bob Carter, MD, PhD, Maurizio Fava, MD, and Bruce Rosen, MD, PhD created a vision for providing compassionate, integrated, multidisciplinary care for patients with brain and nervous system disease and their families. The leadership team works closely with other neuroscience leaders from across the hospital to ensure the advancement of collaborative neuroscience.
