College Fair offers opportunities

Exploring options: Heath talks with a representative from the MCPHS at the MGH College Fair

Solodeen Heath always wanted to be a dentist, but with a family and all the responsibilities that come with it, he knew dental school just wasn’t in the cards. At this year’s MGH College Fair, however, Heath, a dental assistant in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, had the opportunity to learn more about dental hygiene programs and speak with admission representatives from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS)about transferring credits from his business management degree into the school’s accelerated program.

“Being a dental assistant is good, but an opportunity like this could help me provide better for [my family],” he said. “It could really open the door for me.”

Held annually by the Human Resources Office of Training and Workforce Development, the event gives MGHers the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives from area colleges and hear about their academic programs at the certificate, associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree levels.

Joanne Gover, RN, of Vincent Obstetrics & Gynecology, took the opportunity to learn more about the science programs available at area colleges. She has teenagers at home who will soon be looking at schools, and by grabbing a few brochures at the MGH event, she hoped to get a little bit of a jump on the process. “I’m just trying to get as much information as I can ahead of time,” she said. “I asked a lot of questions about SAT scores, grades and other requirements.”.
