After Surgery

Your nurse and/or surgeon will give you instructions before you go home after surgery. They will review them with you and your escort, family member, or friend as well as give you a written copy

For a safe, effective recovery, you must:

  • Have a reliable adult present to drive you home after surgery
  • Arrange for someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery and help you around the house or with getting your prescriptions filled
  • Not drive for 24 hours after anesthesia

Getting in Touch with the OSC After Surgery

If you have questions about your discharge instructions or medications, please call your surgeon’s office at the number provided on your discharge paperwork. However, on the day after your surgery, you will also be contacted by the Mass General OSC team via text message to respond to a text-based survey. In the survey, you can indicate if you would like to receive a call from the OSC staff. Remember, you can always call to speak to a recovery room nurse at the OSC. We are available Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you had surgery in the Blue Building, please call 781-487-6950. If you had surgery in Green Building, please call 781-487-2900. If it is a weekend, holiday, or after hours, please contact your surgeon’s office.
