Skeletal Biology Research Center

The Skeletal Biology Research Center (SBRC) applies advances in treatment to the art of reconstruction for congenital and acquired facial deformities.

Drs. Kaban and Troulis of SBRC.

The Skeletal Biology Research Center (SBRC) was founded by Dr. Leonard Kaban in 1994. Dr. Kaban recognized that patient care can only be improved when mechanisms of disease are studied and understood. After being the second SBRC fellow, Dr. Troulis was the Director of the Skeletal Biology Research Center (2002-2017).  In 2017, Dr. Zachary Peacock was appointed Director.

The Skeletal Biology Research Center does pioneering translational work to apply advances in biomedical engineering, biomechanics, tissue engineering, and computer-aided surgical planning to the art of reconstruction and treatment of congenital and acquired facial deformities.
Through the SBRC, we collaborate with colleagues in academia, health care and industry to refine and adapt the latest medical technologies for use in the face and jaws. Our aim is to improve outcomes and quality of life for adults and children in need of treatment of head and neck (jaws) by translating science to clinical care. We use innovative techniques coupled with computer-aided treatment planning to reduce the magnitude of surgical procedures and surgical trauma to improve outcomes with more accurate bone movement and to improve the rate and quality of healing. We are committed to studying rare jaw tumors.

Research Positions

There are both research and clinical-research fellowships (pediatric fellowships) available. These are organized with curriculum, clinical care exposure and research studies, to prepare fellows for an academic career. Interested candidates should contact us or send their CV, letter of interest and two reference letters to:
