The Department of Speech, Language, and Swallowing Disorders & Reading Disabilities provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and treatment programs for all communication and swallowing disorders from newborns to adults.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Speech, Language and Swallowing Disorders & Reading Disabilities specializes in diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders for all ages. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide comprehensive services for acute inpatient and outpatient populations, as well as at two community health centers.

Through communication we develop relationships, express our innermost thoughts and feelings, think and develop ideas to solve simple or complex problems. When the ability to speak, listen, read or write is affected, daily living can be frustrating and isolating.

Eating and drinking are also vital to our existence, but these functions also represent an important social ritual that can be difficult and intimidating for those who are unable to swallow.
