Denise W. Gee, MD, is an advanced laparoscopic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive foregut and bariatric surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is the vice chair of clinical operations at the Mass General Department of Surgery. Dr. Gee has a busy clinical practice focused on the management of foregut disorders (i.e., GERD, hiatal/paraesophageal hernias and achalasia) and morbid obesity.  Dr. Gee also performs open and laparoscopic general surgery such as ventral/inguinal hernia repairs and cholecystectomies. Her leadership roles in these areas of clinical expertise include being section head for the Mass General Swallowing, Heartburn, and Esophageal Disease (SHED) Program as well as the surgical director of the Mass General Weight Center. 

Academically, Dr. Gee is actively involved in surgical education research and identifying innovative ways to train the next generation of surgeons. She is an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and is a leader in this field serving as the program director of the Mass General Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship, director of Surgical Simulation in the Department of Surgery, associate program director of the Mass General Surgical Residency Program and co-director of the ACS-AEI Surgical Education and Simulation Research Fellowship.   

Dr. Gee brings her clinical and academic expertise onto a national level by serving in multiple leadership roles in SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons), ASE (Association for Surgical Education) and the Fellowship Council.
