Surgery of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

The Department of Otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital present “Surgery of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands.” This CME reviews surgical techniques, molecular genetic analysis, and advances in treatment for diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Course Description

This two and a half day conference focuses on surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Panel discussions center on management of difficult cases with invited audience participation. Discussion topics include:

  • Preoperative workup of both thyroid and parathyroid surgical disease with an emphasis on fine needle aspiration, preop molecular analysis, and preop parathyroid localization imaging options
  • Surgical techniques (recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring, parathyroid identification and preservation, intraoperative parathyroid hormone analysis), including minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • Molecular genetic analysis for thyroid carcinoma and advances in oncogene research
  • Surgical philosophy regarding bilateral thyroid surgery, surgical treatment of the neck and surgical treatment of invasive tracheal disease
  • Recognition and treatment of postoperative complications, including new advances in their treatment

Target Audience

The course is geared toward physicians involved in the management of thyroid and parathyroid disease, with a focus on surgeons and endocrinologists.
