Our interest is the development of clinical software that increase quality, increases efficiency and decreases the cost of care. Our goal is to develop modular software that can act as a specialty specific front-end interface to the Electronic Health Record. Our current efforts include the development of several software modules:
- Breast Cancer Risk Clinic Module
- Breast Surgery Clinic Module
- Pre-Anesthesia Testing Module
- Prenatal Module, to determine the need for genetic testing or counseling for other high-risk behavior
- Rheumatology Clinic Module

Massachusetts General Hospital and the Newton Wellesley Hospital have developed software that helps to identify and manage women at high risk for hereditary cancer. The software is currently in use at several breast and risk assessment clinics and is in the process of being implemented at many others. The software is available as freeware.
This system allows the patient to input his or her own family history and risk data using a tablet PC. Data may also be entered by a clinician or staff member through a desktop PC. When the tablet system is used, the patient's data is wirelessly transmitted to the server, where the clinician can view, edit and print it.
The data is then analyzed for breast and ovarian cancer risk, and a printout of risk information is generated. Printouts include risk calculations, family history and a graphical pedigree.

Dr. Hughes is a member of the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital where he is the Surgical Director of the Breast Screening Program and Co-Director of the Avon Comprehensive Breast Evaluation Center.
He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Medical School, and trained at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh in general surgery. He did a fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Hughes is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and was formerly on the faculty of Tufts University, the University of California, and Davis and Brown University. Dr. Hughes has served on numerous national and regional committees and is actively involved in research regarding the genetics, screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
He is the author of numerous papers and book chapters on the subjects of breast cancer, screening, diagnosis and treatment, and risk assessment.
Sherwood S. Hughes

Sherwood Hughes is a member of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization at the Massachusetts General hospital where he develops web based applications and reporting systems. He was educated at Boston University and Harvard University in IT and Economics. Mr. Hughes is also an active community member in Boston's South End and past President of the Blackstone/Franklin Square Neighborhood Association.
In collaboration with Dr. Kevin S. Hughes, Christine Lawrence, Brian Drohan, and Phil Bosinoff, Mr. Hughes has created the cancer risk suite of applications available on this site.
Brian has previously worked as an embedded systems programmer in the VOIP (Voice Over IP) industry prior to enrolling in a PhD program in the Biomedical Engineering department at the University of Massachusetts. While completing his course work he has been actively involved in the academic collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital in developing methods for the population wide identification of patients at high risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. His current research interests are in visual analytics, mathematical modeling, and digital image processing.
Phil Bosinoff is a software consultant specializing in database applications, data mining, and advanced analytics, particularly applications and tools which require some level of mathematical modeling.
He is currently collaborating with others on the Hughes riskApps suite of cancer risk assessment tools. Mr. Bosinoff has both undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT. His career spans many years at IBM, ROLM, Tandem, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard, where he developed several models and products for capacity planning, for computer performance, and for optimizing query execution times. Mr. Bosinoff has several joint patents for data mining and analytic data analysis tools. In addition to providing on-going consulting services for HP, Mr. Bosinoff also gets enjoyment tutoring college students in algebra, calculus, and statistics.
Chris Lawrence is a software consultant specializing in the development of applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. She began her involvement on the Hughes riskApps project in 2005 while she completed her Masters in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Ms. Lawrence obtained a BS in Computer Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In addition to her work on this project, Ms. Lawrence also works at Pfizer, developing software solutions to support drug discovery. Her hobbies include sailing, travel and European board games.
