There is no doubt that the practice of anesthesiology has dramatically transformed modern medicine. In 1846, history was made at Massachusetts General Hospital when the first successful demonstration of ether anesthesia took place in the hospital’s operating theater, the Ether Dome. Since that monumental day, the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Mass General has continued to foster innovation and shape medical practice. We have our eyes on the future, while also paying homage to our rich history of discovery, one known for its inventions that have radically changed the practice of anesthesia.
The long tradition of groundbreaking discovery from our department is guided by our mission to provide the highest standards of clinical care to our patients in a safe and compassionate environment. Our faculty comprises of specialists from a variety of services in our operating rooms, obstetric suites, pain centers, and surgical and heart center intensive care units.
