About Andrew Warshaw, MD

Surgeon-in-Chief, Emeritus; Director, Pancreatic Biology Laboratory, Mass General Cancer Center; Director, Andrew L. Warshaw Institute for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Dr. Andrew Warshaw, a graduate of Harvard College and of Harvard Medical School, trained in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He also spent two years as a Clinical Associate in the Section on Gastroenterology of the National Institutes of Health and was a research fellow in medicine (gastroenterology) at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Since 1972, he has been on the staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In 1987, he became Professor of Surgery at Harvard and in 1997, the W. Gerald Austen Professor of Surgery, Surgeon-in-Chief and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Warshaw has been President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the International Association of Pancreatology, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the New England Surgical Society, the Halsted Society, the Boston Surgical Society, the Society of Surgical Chairs, and the American Pancreatic Association. He was a Director of the American Board of Surgery and its Chairman in 1993. He has served as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons and chair of its Socioeconomic Issues Committee. He has been First Vice-President of the College, a member of its Health Policy Steering Committee, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the American College of Surgeons Professional Association/Political Action Committee. In 2007 he was appointed Treasurer of the American College of Surgeons. He is Chair of the ACS Health Policy and Advocacy Group.

Dr. Warshaw has made important contributions to the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammatory and malignant lesions of the pancreas. His bibliography lists 385 original reports as well as 250 book chapters, reviews, and monographs and 13 books. He is Editor-in-chief of the journal SURGERY.
