About Marcelo Matiello, MD

Dr. Matiello is a highly accomplished academic neurologist, renowned for his expertise in Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica, MOG antibody disease, Optic Neuritis as well as in his Comprehensive General Neurology practice. He is also known for his dedicated clinical research contributions, and exemplary commitment to educating the next generation of neurologists at Harvard Medical School. With a strong background in both clinical practice and research, he has made significant strides in advancing the field of neurology and improving patient care.

Education and Training: 

Dr. Matiello completed his medical school at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with highest honors and graduated at the top of his class. He then pursued his passion for neurology by obtaining both internal medicine and neurology residency in renowned hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. Driven by a relentless pursuit of knowledge, he further specialized in multiple sclerosis and associated conditions at the Mayo Clinic, where he also obtained a Master’s of Science Degree in Clinical and Translational Research.

Following the completion of two fellowships at the Mayo Clinic,  Dr. Matiello embarked on one year Internal Medicine residency program at Yale Neuro Haven Hospital, where he was awarded with the Outstanding Resident Award.  To expand his understanding of neurological disorders and expand the frontiers of his medical knowledge, he underwent residency training at Harvard Medical School -  Mass General and Brigham and Women hospitals. 

Clinical Expertise:

With over a 15 years since the completion of his first Neurology residency,  Dr. Matiello has become a trusted authority in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological conditions. He has a special interest in neuroimmunology  disorders, and has developed innovative approaches to improve patient outcomes in these areas. His patient-centered approach, coupled with his knowledge and exceptional diagnostic skills, has earned him a reputation as a compassionate and skilled clinician. Dr. Matiello practices at Mass General Hospital, as the MGH affiliated Nantucket Cottage Hospital and through the MGH Teleneurology Consultations providing care to network of over a dozen hospitals in 5 different states. 

Research Contributions: 

Dr. Matiello’s research contributions have significantly advanced the understanding of neurological diseases and their underlying mechanisms. His groundbreaking work in the field of MS, NMO and MOGAD has led to novel insights into the pathophysiology of these conditions, paving the way for the development of potential better diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. He has published over 80 scientific paper or book chapters, and his clinical and research findings have been published in numerous high-impact scientific journals including New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, Jama Neurology, Neurology Clinical Practice, Annals of Neurology, Muscle & Nerve, Multiple Sclerosis, Journal of Neuroimmunology.   He has been invited to present his work in over 100 national and international conferences. 

Teaching and Mentoring: 

Passionate about education, Dr. Matiello is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of neurologists. As a respected academic, he holds an Associate Professor faculty position at Harvard Medical School, where he imparts his knowledge and expertise to medical students, residents, and fellows. His teaching methods are highly regarded, as he encourages critical thinking to develop well-rounded physicians. He has been awarded several faculty teaching awards, including Harvard Medical School PCE Faculty Award.  He is a former Morgan-Zinsser Fellow of The Academy of Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. 

Professional Leadership: 

Dr. Matiello is the Vice-Chair of Clinical Affairs at the Mass General Hospital. He is also the director of MGH Teleneurology. He is an esteemed member of several professional organizations, in the field of neurology, including the American Academy of Neurology, National MS Society, Guthy-Jackson Foundation for NMO, Sumaira Foundation for NMO and MOGAD, where he plays an active role in shaping the future of the specialty. He serves on various committees and task forces dedicated to advancing neurological research, promoting evidence-based practices, and improving patient care. His leadership skills, combined with his unwavering dedication to the field, have positioned his as a trusted voice in academic neurology.

Dr. Matiello speaks three languages and other than English, he is also certified to provide neurological care for Spanish and Portuguese speaking patients.
