Application Process

Applications for the Program in Diagnostic Radiology are made through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) in the fall of the fourth year of medical school, approximately 20 months before the starting date of July 1.

Applications must be submitted before October 16 of the corresponding match cycle. No applications will be considered if submitted after October 16.

The Department of Radiology participates in the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The following components of the application should be submitted through ERAS and are essential to complete the application:

  • MyERAS application
  • Personal statement
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE or Dean's letter)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE STEP 1 score report (passing score required)
  • USMLE STEP 2 score report (optional)

To be eligible for the program, candidates must complete at least one year of post-graduate training in a clinical medical field before starting radiology residency.

International medical graduates are made aware of the restrictive provisions of Public Law 94-484, the Health Professions Education Assistance Act. The following conditions must be met:

  • Standard ECFMG certificate
  • Completion of an accredited internship in the United States
  • Eligibility for ECFMG visa sponsorship if candidate does not have permanent status in the United States.

On the basis of the submitted application, approximately 100 candidates are selected for interviews. Although we wish we could meet all our applicants, logistical and time constraints allow us to meet only a small number of applicants each year. There are no minimum board scores or other threshold requirements that would exclude an applicant from consideration. Applicants are chosen for interviews based on a comprehensive application review with consideration of factors such as clinical competency, general achievements, and personal qualities among others. Diversity of skill sets, experiences, and backgrounds is highly valued in our community and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates, including members of under-represented minority groups.

Applicants will be notified as soon as possible for an interview date in November through January. For a variety of reasons, occasionally applicants may be asked to interview on short notice. If a request for an interview has not been received from us by Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November), it is very unlikely that an applicant will be interviewed.

Our program coordinator, Jacquie Williams-Johnson, can be contacted via email at jwilliams-johnson@partners.org if personal circumstances demand direct information.

2023 to 2024 Interviewing Process

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residency interviews will be conducted virtually for the 2023-2024 cycle per recommendations from the ACGME and AAMC

Further details regarding the remote interview day will be announced closer to the interview dates.  We understand the uncertainty that applicants are facing with the upcoming interview cycle and are committed to providing an optimal remote interview experience that allows applicants to gain a sense of the program and culture here at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted directly by email to select from one of several dates in November through January.
