Emergency Radiology Fellowship

Overview

Our one year Emergency Radiology fellowship program, with an option for a second year, involves imaging of both traumatic and non-traumatic emergencies, with broad sub-specialty level exposure to a variety of body & neuro-imaging conditions not only at our main campus teriary care Harvard Medical School associated teaching hospital, but also throughout our affiliated community hospital network.

As a Level I Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, and Level I Burn Center, Mass General is accredited to treat patients with the most critical injuries and sees over 110,000 patients per year. Over 110,000 imaging examinations are performed annually in the Division of Emergency Radiology, which is equipped with the most state-of-the-art multi-detector CT scanners (including two dedicated ED dual-energy CT scanners), a 1.5T MR scanner, 24/7 dedicated ultrasound coverage, and three digital radiographic rooms. The division is completely digital, with film interpretation on six PACS workstations and 3-D workstations.

Mass General is home to the first Emergency Radiology Fellowship program in the US, started in 1986 by Robert Novelline MD, who also helped co-found the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER) and the American Journal of Emergency Radiology (AJER). Many of our former fellows and staff are now leaders in academic medicine.

Curriculum

We have a fun and vibrant group, with instruction provided at daily case review conferences, weekly teaching conferences, and research meetings. Fellows also have the opportunity to attend teaching conferences of other radiology subspecialty divisions. Consultation throughout the workday occurs with our team of staff radiologists, emergency department physicians, and trauma surgeons; there is additional exposure to abundant learning opportunities through interaction with other consultative subspecialty services, such as pediatrics, oncology, & transplant surgery.

Ample time is available for elective rotations with other Mass General radiology subspecialty divisions, including several weeks required rotation with our neuroradiology service, along with opportunities for cardiothoracic, pediatric, & abdominal imaging; ED-related AI, dual energy CT, and MRI research is encourged and supported. Participation in our wide variety of ongoing clinical investigations typically results in presentations at major medical meetings and/or publication in major imaging journals, depending on the fellow’s future career goals. Opportunities for mentorship, learning, and leadership are enhanced by the outstanding quality and accomplishments of our MGH ED Radiology core faculty members, including but not limited to Drs. Avery (MGH Radiology Vice Chair for Education and Director of Harvard Medical School Radiology Clerkship), Succi (Strategic Innovation Leader MGB Innovation and Executive Director Mass General Brigham MESH Incubator), and Alkasab (Associate Chair, MGB Radiology Enterprise Informatics/IT). Moonlighting opportunities are also available and encouraged.

Timeline

The Emergency Radiology Fellowship program at Massachusetts General Hospital has an available position for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Applications for the 2025-26 academic year will be accepted after November 1, 2023 in accordance with the current SCARD guidelines; per these guidelines, open house webinars for the 2025-2026 academic year will be conducted after November 1, 2023. The MGH Division of Emergency Radiology, together with the membership of the American Society of Emergency Radiology (ASER), has joined the NRMP Subspecialty Match for our 2025-2026 Fellowship class, and will abide by their timeline and procedures. The Selection Process

The selection process involves an initial assessment of your CV, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. Selected applicants will be invited for half-day interviews with Fellowship Director Ajay Singh, MD; Michael Lev, MD, Chief of the Division of Emergency Radiology; and other staff members and current fellows. The applicant will have an opportunity to get acquainted with our working environment and facilities. There are up to five fellowship positions available per academic year.

Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs, IMGs)

Foreign medical graduates are encouraged to apply. Please note: To be considered for a fellowship position, you must have passed the entire USMLE (steps 1, 2, 3, CSA and TOEFL) and be eligible for a Medical License in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
