The McCance Center for Brain Health Clinic is a “clinical translational” program, meaning we focus on bringing new research findings into patient care. Patients have access to care based on the world’s leading research in brain health, and when appropriate, patients at the McCance Clinic are able to seamlessly participate in research during their care so that we can develop new effective tests and treatments faster than ever before.

Some leading areas of McCance Center research that are available through the McCance Clinic include the Brain Care Score® and the SHIELD plan.

McCance Brain Care Score

During your visit, your physicians will help you to compute a personalized McCance Brain Care Score, which measures what you are already doing to protect your brain and prolong your brain health – exercise, sleep, social interactions, lowering blood pressure and more. We will work with you to develop a plan to achieve your highest score so you can maximize your potential for maintaining your brain health as you grow and thrive.

SHIELD Plan: Focus on Prevention

A great deal of scientific evidence shows that lifestyle choices have a substantial impact on brain health. Our preventative approach to care aims to empower healthy individuals to adopt sustainable habits which together form what McCance Center co-founder Dr. Rudy Tanzi calls the “SHIELD” plan, a set of six things people can do to reduce dementia risk, including getting enough sleep, spending time with friends, and choosing a healthy diet.

Supplements

Many dietary supplements are mentioned in the context of improving or sustaining brain health. Our doctors can review the latest research with you and clarify what has been scientifically proven to have health benefits, and if applicable, recommend a regimen that takes into account your specific situation.

Research Studies

Your brain health needs change as you age, as do the lifestyle choices that best serve you. We attend to these changing needs by re-evaluating and adapting our clinical recommendations over time. These recommendations are largely informed by the insights you provide through your participation in our innovative research, ranging from genomic sequencing and brain imaging to the pioneering of new clinical trials. Your participation in these studies not only supports your own brain health goals, but also helps to further brain health knowledge for generations to come.
