Rehabilitation plays a critical role in recovery of patients after neurological illness. Traditional care models involve the introduction of rehabilitation later in the medical course, after stabilization and recovery. The NeuroICU at Massachusetts General Hospital has pioneered the approach of early introduction of neurorehabilitation, in close partnership with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a global leader in rehabilitation.

This program is overseen by physicians with a specialization in neurotrauma and stroke rehabilitation and involves physical, occupational and speech and language therapy evaluations and treatment. The early introduction of rehabilitation measures helps to ensure patients make more rapid and complete recoveries. This unique service is reinforced through the NeuroRecovery Clinic, the Neurorehabilitation Clinic at Spaulding and an extensive research infrastructure.
