MGH Receives Premier Level Certification from the International Geriatric Fracture Society
Massachusetts General Hospital has been recognized as a Premier Level CORE certified hospital by the International Geriatric Fracture Society.
With over 15 years of experience teaching and treating orthopedic trauma, Thuan Ly, MD, chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, has the knowledge and skillset necessary to manage any and all traumatic fractures. Dr. Ly specializes in orthopaedic trauma surgery to help patients quickly return to their previous level of activities. Orthopaedic trauma can range from simple fractures (broken bone) to more complex injuries such as fractures that involve the joint (periarticular fractures-ankle, tibia, distal femur), pelvis, acetabular, long bone (femur, tibia) and fractures that failed to heal properly.
Dr. Ly is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic trauma surgeon. He earned his medical degree and completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Minnesota. He did his fellowship training at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
Dr. Ly approaches to his clinical and academic career have always centered on excellence in patients care, education / research, and system improvement. Prior to arriving at MGH, he was the director of the orthopaedic trauma at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He has been honored many times for patients care (Castle Connolly Top Doctors Ohio- annually since 2016), education/research (medical student, emergency and orthopaedic residents teaching award, national AO Trauma North America instructor award, chosen as chair/faculty for multiple orthopaedic resident fracture courses, and multiple impact publications), and have been instrumental in improving hospital systems (patients care, operating room and hospital efficiency).
Dr. Ly is the Director of the Mass General Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship and is excited to share his expertise with the next generation of orthopedic practitioners. Dr. Ly brings a wide breath of expertise with his approaches to providing excellence in clinical and academic pursuits to the area. He believes in educating patients about their injuries while encouraging them to play an active role in their own recovery, through optimization measures like physical therapy, bone health, family support and smoking cessation.

Dr. Ly's clinical and research interests are in the area of orthopaedic trauma, specifically acetabular, pelvis, periarticular fractures and polytrauma. He feel it is important to participate in multi-center studies (ie METRC, FAITH etc) in order to contribute and to improve patients care. Dr. Ly has a passion for educating the orthopaedic residents, fellows, and emergency rotating residents. He makes a significant effort to carry this passion for education to a national level by being an AO faculty and participating in the OTA comprehensive fracture course for residents on a regular basis.
